Vase

Vase

When I painted ‘Vase’ decades ago I though painting had to be wrestled to the ground, stabbed with a palette knife and ground into submission with oil, impasto paint and survival of the fittest. If it didn’t have at least 6 layers and 25 tubes of paint then it couldn’t hold its head up as a painting. This ‘Vase’ is a very good example of such a longwinded process. I am less likely to need so much paint and paste these days to justify a painting.

London, 1983.
